Energy use in Sweden

How has the use of energy in Sweden changed in the last 40 years?

Gathering data from a database

Open the US Energy Information Authority database here.

Use the tabs for Select Data and Select Countries to find data for electricity generation in Sweden. Change the units to Joules.

Use the Download button to download .csv file. Import the file into Excel using Data > Text (the data in the file is separated with commas).

Organizing data in Excel

You may need to change decimal points to commas to show a decimal depending on the regional setting of your computer. You can use the Find and Replace tool in the Edit menu for this.

You now have a row of data for electricity generation in Sweden. Move the data so that there is at least one row above where you can list the dates and headings for your row.

In your row for year, write the year 1982 in the appropriate box. You could type out each year, but there is an easier way… in the next box, write a formula using an = sign. (For example =B2+1) Hover over the corner of the cell to get a filled cross and click and drag to copy formulas across the row.

Change your data from rows to columns by copying the data and then choosing Transpose from the Paste tab.

Now you have a table of data. Copy paste it into a Word document and give it a title.

Drawing a graph

Highlight the data and Insert ChartScatter.

Format the graph with horizontal and vertical gridlines, labels and units on each axis, deleting the legend and an overall title. Instructions can be found here.

Paste your graph into your Word document.

A description of the data

Describe the data in 2 sentences in your Word document.

Post your description and data as a comment to Managebac.
